Torrevieja – The Old Tower

Torrevieja, Torrevieja – The Old Tower

The name of this village comes from the literal translation of Old Tower [ torre – vieja].
Since around 1500, the Mediterranean sea was ruled by pirates from the Ottoman Empire, no coastal settlement was safe and each was vulnerable to looting and raids. Spanish ruler Phillip III focused on defense infrastructure. Dozens of defensive towers were built from the border with France to Cadiz and became part of a network of fortifications, one of which is the tower in Torrevieja.
The towers operated on a simple principle: when enemy ships were spotted, they would light a fire, which would be noticed by the defenders from the next tower, this notification system was able to alert all posts along the coast within three hours.

Torrevieja has a special microclimate, as it is located between the two large salt lakes of the Las Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja nature parks and the Mediterranean Sea.
This microclimate has been recognized by the World Health Organization as one of the healthiest places on earth.

It is also an attractive destination for fans of scuba diving and all varieties of sailing. The beaches are always extremely clean, and lifeguards are constantly watching over swimming safety. The water is crystal clear and has an unusual blue color.

A beautiful promenade several kilometers long completes the wonderful picture of this interesting town.
